Today we received an email from a lovely person in The US asking - if I recommend a particular DHT blocking shampoo.

I don’t recommend a particular brand of shampoo - but I do recommend shampoos that contain Ketaconzole.

A well known one is: Nizoral -

Ketoconazole shampoos are available over the counter:

I’m also going to share side effects and whether women can use this shampoo at the end of the video!

Ketoconazole fights Hair Loss

Ketoconazole is often used to treat dandruff or conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis.

But there is one small study highlighting that it can promote hair growth or reduce hair loss.

A very small study based on 15 people with alopecia, found that ketoconazole may be able to improve hair regrowth.

There is some anecdotal evidence that Ketoconazole can help to stop shedding.

Does Ketoconazole block DHT?

Going back to the small study just mentioned - link is in the description -

Ketoconazole doesn’t actually block DHT but it does block the enzyme 5 Alpha Reductase which is responsible to producing DHT - and so in a round about way - it helps to block DHT.

Lets talk about the side effects of Ketoconazole

Side effects include:

  • severe itching
  • swelling of the face, tongue, or throat
  • difficulty breathing
  • rash
  • dizziness

The side effects of Ketoconazole on pregnant or breastfeeding women have not been well-studied - so its important to speak to your doctor or midwife before trying out this shampoo.

The safety of ketoconazole hasn’t been well-studied in children so only use this shampoo if your child’s doctor has told you to do so.

My advice would be that once you’ve started to notice hair thinning or a slightly receding hair line - try these more gentle hair treatments.

I don’t think it would be a good idea to go full pelt into a harsh treatment like Minoxidil or worst still Finasteride. As hair loss progresses - you can move on to the big guns.

But lighter products that solve the problem are definitely the way forward.

Although I cant really recommend a specific DHT blocking shampoo - I would suggest go to your local pharmacy or when you’re shopping online - look for these specific ingredients which an help to:

  1. Block DHT
  2. Inhibit the enzyme 5-Alpha Reductase
  3. Help to remove DHT from the scalp

  • Zinc
  • Saw Palmetto
  • Flax
  • Sesame
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Nettle extract
  • Biotin
  • Salycilic Acid
  • Azelic Acid
  • Aloe Vera
  • shampoo is not a miracle remedy for male pattern baldness. However, it can complement the hair loss treatment plan you’re on.
