How Hair Growth Happens
Let’s have a quick recap of the four stages of hair growth - as this sheds how hair is lost and how we can keep our hair in the growing phase for as long as possible!
Hair growth is separated into four phases:
Anagen is the growth phase and lasts for 3-5 years. In this phase, the hair grows nearly half-inch every month. Full-length hair from this phase is about 18-30 inches long.
The anagen phase can be affected by various factors like the weather- our hair is known to grow faster in summer than winters.
Catagen is the regression phase of hair growth and is the transition phase to shedding.
In this phase, the hair follicles detach from the papilla which house tiny blood vessels that nourish the cell.
The hair stops growing due to the loss of nourishment. This phase lasts for about 10 days.
In the third stage known as telogen, the hair is supposed to rest before it detaches itself from the follicle and enters the shedding stage or exogen.
After the detachment of the hair from the follicle, the follicle remains inactive for nearly 3 months after which a new cycle of hair growth starts.
The different hair strands on your head are in different growth phases which is the reason why all the hair does not shed at once.
So now we’ve caught up on the four stages of hair growth, let’s look at the various remedies that keep your hair follicles in the Anagen, or Growth phase for as long as possible and out of the Shedding Phase!
So let’s get started on our Homemade Remedies for Hair Loss
I just want to quickly touch upon hair loss common in men, often referred to as male pattern baldness.
Androgenic Alopecia, or Pattern Baldness
In this condition, the hair loss starts at the crown of the head and forms a horseshoe pattern.
This is caused by testosterone which is converted into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), it attaches itself to hair follicles which shrink, which over time, reduces hair growth and fostering hair loss.
Some of the homemade treatments we’re going to discuss help to keep DHT moving by stopping this hormone from attaching itself to hair follicles.
The treatments I’m going to share also help to keep circulation healthy.
Normal circulation means that DHT can’t settle at the hair follicle and start the process of shrinking the hair follicle.
Healthy circulation also means that many of the right nutrients and vitamins are arriving at the scalp, and nourishing it and the hair follicle.
As well male pattern baldness some of the other causes of hair loss include:
In the same way that you might build your physique by eating more protein and cutting back on sugar or fatty foods,
your hair also needs protein and the right vitamins and minerals to grow.
We’ve covered this in loads of detail in one of our other videos - The best vitamins for hair growth - I’m going to put a link in the description so please do check that out - but just to give you a quick recap.
If your diet is lacking in nutrients like iron, protein, vitamin B, etc. it can lead to thinning hair as these nutrients are responsible for production of keratin which is an important protein for hair nourishment.
Fried and sugary foods can increase the production of Sebaceous DHT which can speed up hair loss
Hence, a balanced diet is very important for healthy and nourished hair and it also prevents hair loss.
As well as male pattern baldness and nutrient deficiencies, hair can become dry, brittle and break near the scalp.
In this condition, the hair breaks from the middle of the strand or a few inches away from the scalp.
This kind of damage is a clear sign of keratin weakening and breakage due to severe damage to the hair protein.
If you or someone you know is experiencing this type of problem, then you should give your hair a rest from hair styling products like bleaches, dyes, harsh shampoos, heat, etc.
You should also avoid hairstyling practices and treatments which will put stress on them
such as tight pony tails, braids - which can lead to a condition called Traction Alopecia which is gradual hair loss, caused primarily by pulling force being applied to the hair.
So an easy way to slow down hair loss is to stop constrictive hairstyles.
Stress caused by physical or emotional trauma can have many negative effects on your body including hair loss.
We cover this in lots of detail in another video - I’m going to put in the link below
You can experience hair loss 3-6 weeks after a stressful event
Stress-induced hair loss is thought to be more prominent in women than men. It is also a temporary -
So the homemade treatments that I’m going to share help to speed up hair growth and help to move hair out of the resting / shedding phase and back into the growing phase!
