Marijuana and Hair Growth - What is the reality?

Marijuana and Hair Growth - What is the reality?

Marijuana is the greenish-gray mixture of the dried flowers of Cannabis sativa.

It’s the most popular illegal drug in The UK. 30% of adults aged 16 to 64 in England and Wales, 30% have tried the drug at least once see

So does Cannabis or Marijuana cause hair loss or hair growth?

It seems to depends on how it’s being used:

Scientists at The University of Amsterdam studied men and woman aged between 18 and 60 who regularly smoked the drug.

They found that young men in particular were prone to some of the more negative effects of smoking this drug and hair loss was one of them.

So let’s discuss the various ways Marijuana can cause or speed up hair loss:

Hormonal changes

The main and strongest ingredient in marijuana, is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
When you: smoke, vaporize or otherwise ingest marijuana it interferes with Testosterone levels. For some men testosterone levels reduce:
This can lead to symptoms such as:
  • reduced sex drive,
  • inability to get and keep an erection, inability to sexually perform, decreased body hair,
  • Infertility,
  • increased body fat, fatigue,
  • decreased muscle mass, anxiety, and depression.

Alternatively, in some people, smoking marijuana can lead to an immediate increase in testosterone levels of around 3 to 5%. People who are chronic users of marijuana can also experience hair loss on the scalp or even excess hair growth in other parts of their bodies due to this testosterone jump.
Increased testosterone levels can cause your skin’s oil glands to produce more sebum oil. This can lead to inflammation in the skin - leading to acne - as well as scalp inflammation.

An inflamed unhealthy scalp is not a great environment for hair to grow and if you’re prone to male pattern baldness regularly using marijuana can cause or fast forward genetic hair loss in a number of ways. A little background on male pattern baldness If hair loss runs in your family, for example if you’re a man - and your Dad and Uncle are experiencing male pattern baldness then you might also experience it too.

Half of all men worldwide experience male pattern baldness by the time they are 50. Hormones are extremely powerful and one of them, Dihydrotesterone, is responsible for giving men - male characteristics such as a deeper voice. It’s also found in much smaller amounts in women.

DHT flows through the blood and can settle on the scalp. For men who are prone to pattern baldness and for some women, hair follicles can be very sensitive to this hormone. DHT attaches itself to hair follicles, gradually shrinking them, over time, the follicle detaches itself from the blood supply at the scalp.

When this happens, oxygen as well as all the nutrients, vitamins and minerals from the fruits and vegetables you’re eating - they go into your blood, never make it up to your scalp. Your scalp isn’t nourished and hair loss continues. To keep hair healthy, it’s really important to maintain healthy circulation.
Smoking marijuana interferes with healthy circulation. Smoking releases thousands of harmful substances called toxins into your blood. These are absorbed into the bloodstream and dispersed all over your body including the scalp.

As well as interfering with testosterone levels these toxic chemicals shrink blood vessels and impede blood flow. I have a playlist all about blocking DHT and removing it from your scalp.

I’ve written up everything into my gorgeous little Ebook - Everything You Need to Know to Block DHT. I’ve got a shopping list in there of all the best foods, teas, snacks that help to block DHT. I’m also really into my homemade remedies - oils, scalp massage. And an exfoliating scrub that literally lifts off DHT from your scalp and hair follicles..

The Link Between Smoking and Hair Loss?

A lot of research has been carried out on the effects of smoking and hair loss. Tobacco is extremely high in carcinogens. These slow down cell proliferation in the hair follicles. Let’s quickly look at how hair grows - to understand how smoking causes hair loss.

There are three main phases of hair growth:

Anogen - when hair is actively growing - The cells in the hair bulb divide rapidly creating new hair growth - this can last 2 to 7 years- 80 to 90% of your hair is in the Anagen Phase

Catagen - This is a period of around two weeks when your hair. In this transitional phase, hair stops growing and detaches itself from the blood supply and is then named a club hair.

Telogen - This phase begins with a resting period, where club hairs rest in the root while new hair begins to grow beneath it. This phase lasts for around 3 months. After this time, the resting club hairs will fall out to allow the new hair to come through the hair follicle.

When your follicles don’t receive the blood they need for nourishment, the hair growth cycle is interrupted. This forces hair follicles to move prematurely into the Telogen or resting phase until the scalp becomes a better environment for healthy growth. Marijuana and lifestyle changes

Nutritional link between cannabis and hair loss. This  study found that people who regularly used different drugs and cannabis preferred salty and sour tasting food, whilst daily cannabis and tobacco users had a higher preference for sweet and spicy tastes.

Eating lots of junk food or sugary food leads to Nutritional deficiencies. These speed up hair loss, as hair shafts are weakened - they cause breakage to the hair and slow regrowth.

Motivation and Marijuana

If you’ve started noticing increased hair loss, it’s really important to take action, by for example:
  • Eating nutritionally balanced foods,
  • Taking your hair vitamins
  • Using essential oils

And generally taking good care of yourself. You need to be motivated to do so.

Research shows that marijuana use decreases motivation, and this condition is called cannabis a motivational syndrome

So to sum up, smoking, vaporizing marijuana can indeed contribute to hair loss.

But applying CBD oil directly to your hair can improve the health and strength of your hair.

Just like Castor Oil and Argan Oil CBD oil contains a significant amount of omega fatty acids, including 3s, 6 and omega 9.
These oils keep your scalp and hair healthy and nourished.
A healthy fertile scalp is the best possible environment for healthy hair growth, which prevents balding from hair loss. CBD oil, just like other essential oils and carrier oils, coats the hair follicle in a protective sheath, which helps to protect against breakage and environmental factors such as pollution and UV damage, that can also dry out your hair.

So whilst it may not provide the same high, your hair will thank you for it.So how can you slow down hair loss after using Marijuana?
