Turmeric For Hair Growth - Does It Actually Work?

Is Tumeric good for hair growth? Does it Actually Work?

This is a blog that men who are experiencing male pattern baldness will find particularly interesting - because studies have found that Turmeric can interfere with the Enzyme that kick starts male pattern baldness.

So let’s talk about Turmeric!

Turmeric is a member of the ginger family which is native to South Asian countries and India.

The most used part of the plant is the rhizome, or the part of the stem which is underground as the plant grows.

At supermarkets you’ll find powdered turmeric spice - this is actually the  ground, boiled and dried rhizome - interesting fact.

Let’s talk about how Turmeric can encourage hair growth and how to use it!

Inside Turmeric is a chemical compound called Curcumin - and you can actually buy Curcumin separately as supplement.

What have clinical studies said?

Studies have shown that turmeric extracts have similar properties to Finasteride.

As you probably know finasteride is prescription only medication that inhibits the Enzyme 5-alpha reductase.

As you know 5-alpha reductase converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) via the enzyme 5-alpha reductase (5-AR)

This is important because 5-AR has been shown to be a main cause of androgenetic hair loss.

Other studies have also highlighted Curcumin’s ability to inhibit DHT.

Supplementing your diet with curcumin has been show t lead to an increase in the expression of the enzyme Aldo‐Keto reductase 1C2 (AKR1C2).

This also supports the reduction of DHT.

So the research looks extremely promising!

How can we use Turmeric for hair growth?

Firstly we can incorporate it into our diets!

The only major dietary source of curcumin is turmeric

Another spice called shoti (zedoary root) also contains curcumin and is popularly used in Indian pickles.

Turmeric is often used as a spice in Indian, Malaysia and Thai dishes.

Alternatively you could supplement your diet with Curcumin supplements.
